Powder for 45-70.
Jun 9, 2020 · H335 is an excellent powder and is my "go to" powder for my 52-55 gr jacketed bullet 223/5.56 loads along with 125 - 150 gr jacketed bullets in the 30-30 and 308Ws. With cast, H335 is excellent as long as you have the bullet mass and pressure level so it ignites and burns efficiently. With your 45-70 loads that's where you are.
The .45-70 I get from Defender is loaded with a 350gr bullet, powder unknown, primer unknown, and Starline brass. The ammo ships in reusable 20 round plastic boxes. It is $1 per round. This is my source of Starline brass.I love RL7 for all the same reason's Starrbow mentioned, but H4198 is a real good one as well. H322 has a very good following and is very accurate. I really haven't found a bad powder in my 45-70 yet.. Good thing is everything that works in the 45-70, will work excellent with the 444 Marlin you'll eventually have to have! HA! Good luck.
While researching 45-70 loads I tried 5 varieties of Holy Black, Dupont Bulk smokless and yes Pyrodex in the 45-70. These loads were fired from my Uberti 1885, an original trapdoor 1879 and a Pedersoli Sharps. 55 grains by weight of Pyrodex r/s was the best PYRODEX load running from 4 down to 2 1/2" for 100 yard group in all rifles.

Member: Orange Gunsite Family, NRA-Life, the American Legion, and 50-year LEO w/ a 45ACP 1911. All my 1911s are in .45ACP & 10mm.

21,259. To use or not to use a filler in the 45-70 depends. It depend as it does with most other cartridges with cast bullets but also because the 45-70 can be loaded to 4 different levels with cast bullets. What applies within the parameters of one level may not apply within another level.
IMR4064 is a very slow powder for the 45-70. I doubt you can get enough of it in the case to reach dangerous pressures. 55 grains compressed under a 405 grain bullets only generates 26,700 CUP. Just tried Hodgdon's mid-range load for 45-70 with 405g bullet in original Springfield trapdoor. Remington, somewhere around 47.5 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel. This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE!
