Nov 13, 2010 · 2011 Ranger 800 efi 300 miles on it. Lately I have been having cold start problems. The engine cranks but will not start. If I keep trying it it will all of a sudden start like normal. If I touch the throttle it will not start and seems to flood (fuel smell). Dealer suspected Coolant temp sensor and replaced it. Didn't help. They even developed a scan that was supposed to look for possible trouble ECM 's but that proved to be a bust in the end. It seems to me that if the stator was going bad or completely failed, you would have battery charge problems, as the stator (alternator) is what charges and maintains the charge of the battery along with the voltage regulator. I doubt the stator. Likely the coil or CDI.
