A dealer may encounter a customer concern of a Service Emission System Message on the Drivers Information Center (DIC). Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tampering DTCs will turn on this message. There is a new Tech 2 special function that has been added to clear Service Emissions Messages. This is a new function for the 2012 model year.

Just this winter alone it has been in twice to replace the DEF tank heaters. A Reductant System Malfunction Service Bay Test is required when the Service Emission System message or Service Exhaust System message is displayed on the driver information center (DIC). Not sure what scan tool you have but this is the test I run to clear the messages after replacing a DEF heater. D.
Easiest way is to lower tank a bit to find the harness going to tank heater on top of tank. You find to wires coming out of the main def system harness leading to a two wire plug on top of tank. From the plug the wires continue to the sending unit. Unplug the plug and check resistance, if unusally high or an open is found it is bad.The heater circuit is now open so i repaired it myself and reset the codes. I still can't get the service def system to go away. The truck is now in limp mode and has no codes. Any idea how to get it reset without a tech2.
