I recently acquired another 29-2, a minty 4” to fill a long empty hole in the ‘29 collection. Here’s my question: I wasn’t concerned about the year as it is clearly stamped “29-2” and I barely looked at the number before purchasing. Today I was entering everything in the log and I noticed it is a 5 digit N#.

Your Model 29 .44 Magnum revolver dates to 1959. S&W put the serial number on the rear face of the cylinder from the very beginning until about 1958. Yours would have been among the very last to have it in this location. Most guns made after 1957 did not have the serial number stamped in that location. JP

A 5" barrel has a 50% premium over other lengths. Hello. A 4 inch 29-2 is a great gun, I'd be giving it a steady diet of .44 Special myself but to each his own. To me that doesn't look like a factory nickel finish, since the trigger and hammer are also silver and not heat treated.
