The factions are fairly balanced, but, as far as units go, I prefer ones with easy upgrade paths. While ranged troops are universally easy, for an infantry example: the Battanian Wood Runner->Skirmisher->Veteran Skirmisher->Wildling/Mounted Skirmisher line is a very reliable infantry line to level because every step after recruit has a thrown weapon.
Infantry: (Vlandia) Vlandian Voulgiers, hands down the best Melee Unit in the entire game. Absolutely annihilates any other melee unit, does decently against cavalry, and high hitpoints and armor make them good vs. ranged as well. Archers: (Empire) Palatine Guard.Best Cavalry: Also Khan's Guard. Best Archer: Fian Champions. Best Infantry: Also Fian Champions.
