You do not have to do the "xyz story" quest lines. Just do the main quest which guides you to the game (Build an axe, build a house, survive for a season and so on). I am done with the main quest line and have unlocked the max building cap. I did not finish any of the xyz story quests, but did some part of it.

None of the villagers in the valley are smart enough to build or repair carts. If they learned enough to start building carts then they will want more money.
