Moderators are used in a NuclearCraft Fission Reactor. For now, the only available moderators are graphite and beryllium, and they both have the same effect in the reactor core, but there are plans to add more moderators and give them unique stats and possibly even placement rules. Values are taken from the default NuclearCraft config (as of March 20 2018, v2.9e). You may want to consider going for the nuclearcraft fusion reactor for deuterium/tritium anyways, as that fusion combination produces two important fluids: helium (run through a supercooler for liquid helium, which is used for passive coolers in a lot of the better "breeder" reactor designs for getting fission byproducts faster) and Neutron ...

The molten salt fission reactors, on the other hand, create steam that can be used in any kind of steam-powered generator.
