They are a Quick Range class, primarily using bows and light armor. In terms of magick use, the archer class only has one kind of magick: white magick. They then can only know two White Magicks: Cura and Raise. The only other form of magick they are capable of learning is Summoning. As such, they can summon Espers to aid them in battle.
Vaan is best as a Knight/Bushi or Knight/Black Mage through much of the game. On my current playthrough, I made him a Shikari at first, but switched to Knight as soon as getting back to Rabanastre. I was following a guide at first for jobs, before doing research here.
