Devs need to either buff health up to 75k or melee to at least 40% stock for tamed ones. While torpor is increasing, all torpor loss is halted entirely. I knocked out a giga while waiting 3-4 seconds between shots just fine. If torpor from tranqs lasts 5 seconds, then you are fine till that 5th second.
