Doing a 408 conversion and need to know if I need a new crank. The "M" has a shorter stroke. I was told a while back that to use 400 pistons you have to use 400 rods because of the lengths between the 351M and 400 were different. But the same crank could be used as long as you change the pistons and rods. The rods are the same.351M crank pulley. I finally got it off!!! The damper is actually warped. That might be why I had to replace the mains. I was in the scrape yard looking for a damper and found a 400M from a 79 truck and bought it for $150. It actually runs. The only way to tell a 351M from a 400 is to pull the head and measure the stroke, or pull the oil pan and reference the crank number.
